"It's a huge coup for us to have him. He's the most famous Canadian guy in gardening," said club member Jane Falls. "He's doing merging spring perennials for our zone."

The day-long seminar also features two additional speakers. .

How to make vines go vertical

Vines grow quickly. Some will grow quickly on almost anything. But others need help growing in the direction you want them to grow.

From 1,000 Gardening Questions & Answers (Workman Publishing, $19.95 paperback): "Most vines will climb the comparatively smooth bamboo stakes sold in garden centers. But they will be happier – and more inclined to go straight up – if you provide twigs with the bark on, rough sisal twine and/or something else with texture."

Adults Encouraged to Get Out and Try COC's Extension Courses

With a new batch of College of the Canyons extension courses set to begin this month, school officials are encouraging local residents to come explore what the college has to offer in the way of adult education.

"There's nothing more fun than getting out and taking an extension class," said Karen Gorback, COC associate dean of community extension and noncredit programs. "It's a great way to get out and learn something, and there's no better time than now to do it."

While COC extension classes vary in terms of registration fees, one of the college's more popular courses - aqua aerobics for older adults - will be opening two new sections beginning this week.

Starting today at the Fountain Glen Apartment Community in Valencia - located at 23941 Decoro Drive - classes will be held from 9:30 a.m.
